RWJBH Oncology Support Program

The Cancer Support Community (CSC) at Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) in Long Branch and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus (MMCSC) in Lakewood is part of an international non-profit organization. CSC’s mission is to help individuals impacted by cancer enhance their health and well being through participation in free, professionally led programs of emotional, physical and psychological support. With over 170 CSC locations worldwide, including 47 licensed affiliates, our program was the third hospital based CSC affiliate. Currently, there are only seven hospital based programs in the country. Employing a Patient Active Model, which emphasizes better health outcomes when patients are actively involved in decisions surrounding their care, delivery of CSC programs by licenses professionals ensures that all members who are impacted by a cancer diagnosis are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

This is accomplished by offering:

  • Support for the emotional, social, and physical concerns of members from diagnosis through treatment, recovery, survivor ship, and sometimes through advanced disease. Our program provides general and diagnosis specific support groups; strength building exercise classes; mindfulness and relaxation in the form of yoga, tai-chi, Qi-Gong classes, meditation, and guided imagery; as well as myriad opportunities for our members to socialize in a relax atmosphere.
  • Education about what to expect with treatment and its side effects, how to cope and to navigate difficult decisions, and how to live well as a survivor. Educational opportunities include our physician facilitated Frankly Speaking About Cancer lecture series and special presentations by oncology certified staff on topics such as nutrition, healthy living, coping with the cost of cancer, how to speak with family and friends, and help with the information and language needed to talk to children and teens about a family member’s diagnosis.
  • Hope by being with others who are facing cancer survivorship together.
